This exhibition deals with a major issue facing today’s society: the upheavals of relationships between men and women and, more broadlly, gender. To address this issue, the MuCEM gives visitors an opportunity to explore the different ways of being male and female in Mediterranean countries today. Featuring everyday objects, contemporary art (by Niki de Saint Phalle, Louise Bourgeois, Pierre et Gilles, Canan and Sandra Dukic) and film excerpts, the exhibition questions the different aspects of gender relations: how people express their sexuality, meet others, start relationships, have families, express differences and stand up for their rights. The objects in the MuCEM’s collections are accompanied by statements from men and women, film montages and contemporary art installations to present the changes affecting gender relations in the Mediterranean: masculinity, femininity, marriage, flirtation, honour, paternity, maternity, modesty, respect and love.
