What are the connections between Poland and Northern Africa and the Middle East? Is the country really so far away from the Euro-Mediterranean region? How is Poland engaged in the Union for the Mediterranean? These questions are answered by the latest publication edited by Dr. Robert Kusek and Joanna Sanetra-Szeliga from the International Cultural Centre in Krakow, coordinators of the ALF network in Poland. The publication is concerned with identifying, research and analysing the relations between Poland and the Union for the Mediterranean in a broad political, economic, social and cultural context. The articles prepared by experts from Poland and abroad take up such issues as the cultural concept of the Mediterranean, the Euro-Mediterranean space, institutional cooperation between Poland and the Union for the Mediterranean, similarities and differences in political transition in Central Europe after 1989 and in the countries of the so-called Arab Spring. The authors: Jerzy Axer, Andrzej Borowski, Anat Lapidot-Firilla, Marek Dziekan, Tuomo Melasuo, Piotr Nykiel, Irith Cherniavsky, Konrad Pędziwiatr, Katarzyna Górak-Sosnowska, Justyna Zając, Katarzyna Jarecka-Stępień, Anna Raduchowska-Brochwicz, Adam Balcer, Jarosław Dumanowski, Witold Dobrowolski, Magdalena Ujma, Ewa Bal, Jacek Purchla, Robert Kusek, Joanna Sanetra-Szeliga. The book paints a highly interesting picture of political and cultural relations stretching over centuries and exerting significant influence on the culture and history of Poland and eastern Europe […] Poland’s impact on the Mediterranean region has been minimal. In contrast, the impact of the Mediterranean on Polish culture and identity has been vita and determined Poland’s civilisational development – in this sense it is impossible to conceive of Central Europe and Poland without the Mediterranean. Can it be inferred , therefore, that in terms of culture and identity Poland does lie on the Mediterranean? The question remains open; however, this book bring readers closer to an answer , and above all provides them with arguments and inspires further reflections.
