Barvalo
Oxala
In Romani, barvalo means "rich" and, by extension, "proud". This polysemous word is the title of a new exhibition at Mucem devoted to the history and diversity of the Romani populations of Europe. A history that is inseparable from that of antigypsyism, against which those who are sometimes still called "Gypsies" have been fighting for a thousand years.
The exhibition “Barvalo - Roma, Sinti, Manouches, Gitanos, Travellers...”is presented at the Mucem from the 10th of May to the 4th of September 2023.
Reading the stars
Pharaons Superstars
The proposed exhibition “Reading the stars” aims to study our view of the night sky, and our interpretations of the stars and celestial phenomena. Our relationship to the infinite and to the stars that inhabit it has developed according to various religious, scientific, symbolic and even magical points of view. By choosing to develop an exhibition on the stars, Mucem is seeking to find common denominators between Mediterranean and European societies.

Bath Time! Body - Water - Dialogues
Aux Bains
This exhibition is based on the idea of and in collaboration with the Mucem (Musée des civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée), Marseille, France. The travelling exhibition Bath Time! presented the social and cultural history of bathing in the Mediterranean for the first time at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden (Germany, 2020). In its new version at the Archaeological Museum of Chania, the practice of bathing, connected to human existence itself down the centuries, is approached though a broader range of themes and selected objects, mainly drawn from the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Chania and the Mucem, as well as other museums and collections in Greece and France. An original historical and artistic osmosis, and a constant dialogue with the various aspects of bathing practices through time, a vital element of the Mediterranean cultures, are attempted through ancient, medieval and contemporary objects and artworks.
The exhibition « Bath Time! » was presented at the new Archaeological Museum of Chania from 24 May to 5 September 2022.
The exhibition was already presented in Baden-Baden from 07 March to 21 June 2020.
Model clothes
Vêtements Modèles
Blue-collar workwear, tank tops, espadrilles, sweatpants and kilts… Why are these pieces still worn in the street and regularly showcased by designers? Who can remember their initial use and the context in which they were created? The exhibition « Model clothes » retraces the history of these five pieces that have stood the test of time and trends. How have tank tops or blue-collar workwear, designed for the workplace, established themselves as a source of inspiration, to the extent that they are now considered “basics” by the fashion industry? How have kilts and espadrilles, both associated with a specific geographical area, transformed as they have spread to other places? By what means have sweatpants moved away from sports use to become one of the images of urban culture? These pieces originated in sportswear, workwear and regional costumes, but have now become must-have items in any contemporary wardrobe.
The exhibition « Model clothes » was presented at the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design in Riga from 25 May to 25 September 2022
